Four Things You Didn’t Know About Cake Decorating

So your loved one has a birthday coming up and you want to bake and decorate a cake for them. But you’re not sure where to begin. Well, you’ve come to the right place! I will share some tips for you that will help your cake to be above the rest.

Crumb Coat
A crumb coat before the final icing is applied will help to keep crumbs out of the main icing. It is created by dabbing icing along the sides and top of the cake, then refrigerating the cake for at least 20 minutes to set the icing. Then you can apply the final icing layer without worrying about the crumbs from the cake getting mixed in.

Smoothing the Icing
After icing the whole cake, take your spatula and rinse it with warm water. Dry it off well, and then run it along the surface of the cake. This will create a smooth, silky icing surface on which to decorate.

Fondant
Fondant is a sugar-water mixture that has the consistency of soft clay. It can be used as a base covering for the cake, or it can be sculpted or molded into decorations.

Interior Decoration
Add sprinkles, red-hots, marshmallows, chocolate chips, or candy bar chips to your batter to create a colorful interior to your cakes.
